Alfalfa Fertility

The most important tool to use in determining soil fertility in alfalfa production is the soil test. A soil test is very cheap compared to the value of the crop being removed. If a soil test has not been taken from a field in the last two years, it is time to check again. The main nutrient to check is phosphate (P), and possibly sulfur and boron. Fertilizer needs can be applied following hay removal at any cutting. Phosphate needs to be applied if the test shows a low or very low reading. If fields have variable soils, sampling the major soil areas separately would give much more information than combining all soil cores. Sandier areas would be more likely to be low in sulfur and boron.
