Potato Leafhopper Sampling Procedures

Re-growth should be scouted carefully using a 15-inch diameter sweep net. Use pendulum sweeps, and do not sweep-sample when winds are over 10 mph. Take at least 5 sets of 10 sweeps each before tallying a final count. If numbers are variable, take up to 10 sets of 10 sweeps each. Place more emphasis on samples taken during 3-7 and 8-12 inch plant growth stages.

Both adults and nymphs (wingless immature) should be taken into account when making a treatment decision. When examining the sweep net contents, open the bag carefully since many of the adult leafhoppers will readily escape. Total the numbers adults only, but note the presence of nymphs in the sample. Sweep sampling does not sample potato leafhopper nymphs as effectively as adults and thresholds are based on adult counts.

Note: Cool conditions reduce the efficiency of sampling adult PLH; at 60 degrees F the catch is 56a% of that caught at 77 degrees F.

If plants are blossoming, cut and then scout re-growth one week later to see if an insecticide is necessary. If plants are not blossoming, threshold levels are present, and the field is >7 days from the targeted harvest date, then spray now (stay within PHI). Treating now, even if some stunting is apparent, will show a "green-up" response in 2-3 days, allowing the crop to continue to grow and mature to the normal cutting stage.
