Insecticides for Wireworm Control

In small grains, lindane seed treatment can be used. Many of the available small grain seed treatments are lindane fungicide combinations with captan or maneb fungicides. Corn has many insecticides available to control wireworm cruise is the only insecticide labeled for wireworm control in sunflower.

Keep in mind that lindane insecticide seed treatments protect the seed only. This zone of protection does not extend to the below-ground portion of the stem when the crop is in the seedling stage. If wireworm activity persists for several weeks after planting, it is still possible to encounter wireworm seedling damage even in fields that have been treated with lindane seed treatment. This most frequently will occur in field locations that are very heavily infested with wireworms. Commercially applied treatments are systemic and depending on rates can provide some protection for seedlings.
