Checking for Wireworms Following are some suggestions to determine the possible need for a wireworm treatment this spring. Does the field (or fields) in question have a history of wireworm problems? Were wireworms the main cause for a barren, patchy appearance in certain fields during previous growing seasons? Did wireworm sampling within several weeks prior to the spring planting season reveal significant wireworm infestations? Sampling for wireworm should consist of 1 to 2 square foot soil samples per acre at field locations suspected of having wireworm problems. Take each sample to a depth of 5-6 inches and sift carefully for wireworms. If you find 9 to 15 wireworms in 20 samples, the field is safe for small grains only, not including corn. With 20 or more wireworms in 20 samples, damage is likely to occur to all crops. In such fields, wireworm control is advised. If wireworm sampling reveals no wireworms or very few per 20 samples, treatment should not be necessary. Back to Insect - Insects
