Wheat Stem Sawfly Variety Tolerance

Ernest, Cutless (semi-dwarf) and Lew (standard) are probably the most desirable solid stem wheat varieties available in North Dakota. Ernest is a 1995 North Dakota release that has performed well in yield trials in Western North Dakota, is recommended for use in sawfly areas, and is currently a popular option in sawfly trouble spots. Other varieties that could be considered for sawfly infested fields would be: Glenman (semi-dwarf), Lancer (standard), and Leader (standard). The quality, yield potential, and disease susceptibility of all solid stem varieties varies, so producers who are interested in sawfly resistant wheat should check these characteristics carefully before making a selection.

The majority of the durum varieties are susceptible. Lloyd has demonstrated the lowest cutting, but this variety is better suited for Northeastern North Dakota.
