Prepare Seedbeds Carefully Careful seedbed preparation can help avoid production problems. Small grains emerge best when seeded at a 1 1/2 - 2 inch depth in a firm, moist seedbed. Shallower seedings often dry out during adverse weather. Soil crusting, damage from residual herbicides and slower emergence are greater problems when seed is placed deeper than 2 inches. A key factor to prevent emergence problems is that most double disk drills cannot seed deeper than cultivation depths. A cultivator that is carefully adjusted to cut 2 inch deep at the front rank and leveled can make an excellent seedbed that is firm at the 2 inch depth. Shovels overlapping create a level seedbed that allows adequate pressure on drill openers for penetration to firm soil without worry of deep seeding. Badly worn shovels force the cultivator to operate at a deeper depth to properly control weeds or shatter all the soil. This creates an uneven seedbed in which depth control of drill openers is very difficult. Good stands will be necessary to make use of rainfall received this year. Good stands begin with a good job of seedbed preparation. Back to
