Binomial Sequential Sampling Plans for Aphids in Small Grains

HOW TO USE THE SAMPLING PLAN

Begin sampling 100 ft. From field edge. Randomly sample 1 stem every 25 to 35 paces, depending on field size. Take a minimum of 20 stems before making a decision. If a field is greater than 100 acres in size, divide into two areas and sample each separately. If no decision is made after 100 stems, then apply an insecticide if the crop has not headed and/or there is less than 1 ladybird beetle per foot of row.

SAMPLING PLANS A & B

Sampling plan A is based on an economic threshold of 13 aphids per stem. This plan should be used when management costs are below $7.00 per acre and the price of the small grain is greater than $4.00 per bushel. This sampling plan has a "tally threshold of 0". This means a stem is considered infested if it has a one or more aphids present.

Sampling plan B is based on an economic threshold of 20 aphids per stem. This plan should be used when management costs are above $7.00 per acre and/or the price of the small grain is less than $4.00 per bushel. This sampling plan has a "tally threshold of 3". This means a stem is considered infested only if it has 4 or more aphids on it.
