Hayland Fertilization Eight years of research with grassland fertilization was conducted at the Northern Great Plains Research Center in Mandan. The annual application of 40 pounds of N in the spring increased the forage yield of crested wheatgrass, smooth bromegrass, and green needlegrass by 1700, 1800, and 1400 pounds/acre respectively over the unfertilized grass. The response of additional yield will vary depending on the grass specie and with precipitation that occurs during the spring. Under dry spring conditions, there won't be as large of a forage yield increase (table below), however the fertilized grass will be more efficient in water use compared to unfertilized grass.
