Role of Zinc and Deficiency Symptoms Zinc is absorbed by plants as the Zn2+ ion. Zinc uptake by plants is decreased with low soil temperatures. There is also variability between varieties to low soil zinc levels. In zinc sensitive crops such as corn or bean, zinc deficiency has been induced by high phosphate levels, particularly from banded phosphate applications. Zinc is involved in photosynthesis, as well as being part of many enzymes. Zinc deficiency produces leaf abnormalities and yellow interveinal chlorosis. Seed and flower abortion can be observed in bean, pea and flax. Zinc deficiency can also cause maturity timing differences in bean, which contributes to quality problems at harvest. Dry bean deficiency is also expressed in lack of vining. Deficiency in corn is whitening between the leaf margins and midvein. Stunting is also a symptom. Deficiencies can be verified with soil and plant analysis. Back to Nutrient -
