Nitrogen Placed With the Seed

The amount of nitrogen that can be safely placed with small grain seed depends on; type of opener, fertilizer product, soil moisture and soil type.

Nitrogen applied with 18-46-0 or 11-52-0 will not cause seedling injury at normal use rate to most crops. Exceptions are soybeans, and dry beans with both fertilizers and field pea and lentil with 18-46-0. Blended fertilizers, if they contain urea, may cause seedling injury. Under good moisture, seeds in a double disk drill opening cannot tolerate more than 30 lbs of N applied with the seed.

For most conditions all N plus potassium fertilizer should not exceed 30 lbs actual with the seed in combination or alone. When using urea as the N source, N and potassium should not exceed 15 lbs/acre in 6" to 7" drill spacings.
