Nitrogen Products for Small Grain Topdressings

Liquid nitrogen topdressing guides for safe application rates in wheat. A safe rate includes 40 pounds nitrogen per acre during the emergence to tillering growth stage, 20 pounds nitrogen per acre during the tillering to early boot growth stage, and 10 pounds nitrogen per acre during the boot to head emergence growth stage.

Weather and growth stage are the governing criteria. Cool wet weather minimizes leaf damage and can aid recovery allowing higher application rates. Liquid formulations containing urea usually have less leaf yellowing than formulations containing nitrate.

Dry nitrogen can be topdressed at any rate required. All topdressed nitrogen products perform best when one-half inch or more of rain is received shortly after application to carry the nutrients into the root zone.
