SLOW TILLAGE SPEED SAVES RESIDUE

Canadian studies show if you want to conserve residue on summerfallow, slow down cultivation speed and get rid of the mounted harrow.

Mounted harrow use decreases residue conservation by about 50 percent compared with cultivators alone. Similarly, increasing tillage speeds from 3 to 6 to 9 MPH decreased residue conservation to about 50% and 30% respectively of that conserved at 3 MPH.

Depth of tillage had little effect on residue conservation after two operations but deeper tillage reduced residues in subsequent operations.

Where initial residue levels are low, consider substituting herbicides for some or all tillage to provide adequate protection.
