Nitrogen Soil Levels in the Spring

Areas or fields that had or have ponded water most likely will lose N by leaching or volatilization if soils are thawed completely and warm enough to allow nitrification and denitrification. These areas should be checked in the spring to determine nitrogen levels and soils depths where the nitrogen is present. Divide soil sample cores into 0-6 inch and 6-24 inch soil cores to determine the position of the N.
