Effect of Hot Weather on Herbicide Activity

2,4-D, Banvel, Curtail and Stinger

Greater broadleaf weed control
Greater risk of crop injury

Buctril and Bronate

Greater broadleaf weed control
Extreme risk of crop injury - contact leaf burn NOT systemic

Sulfonylureas - Accent, Amber, Basis, Express, Harmony Extra, Basis, etc., except Pinnacle

Greater weed control - Weeds must be actively growing for SU's to work. Greater weed control is assumed ONLY if the weeds are not drought stressed and there is sufficient moisture in the soil.
We don't know about crop response - probably no effect

Pinnacle

Same as SU's above for weed response
Hot weather can increase risk of soybean and corn (Pinnacle is in Basis herbicides) injury

Stampede

Greater weed control
Much greater small grain contact leaf burn - NOT systemic

Hoelon, Dakota, Tiller, Cheyenne

These herbicides are more effective on cool or cold conditions. Therefore, in hot weather both weed control and risk of crop injury will be LESS. Specific weed control will be affect some as SU's. If weed are drought stressed there will be even less grass weed control. However, optimum weed control will be achieved if weeds are actively growing. More herbicide may be needed to get the same weed control as in normal or cool conditions. Foxtail control from Hoelon is greatly reduced if more than 3 or 4-leaves.

Assert

Greater weed control, especially wild mustard control. Extreme risk of sunflower injury, good safety to small grains. Rate must be reduced for use in sunflower. Hot weather significantly increases risk of sunflower injury. NDSU research shows 0.25 pt/A is adequate for wild mustard control in hot weather. This is NOT an NDSU recommendation.

Avenge

Greater wild oat control and slightly more contact leaf burn on small grain.

Atrazine, Bladex

Greater weed control
Greater risk of crop injury only from Bladex - corn leaf burn.

Post Grass Herbicides: Assure, Fusilade, Fusion, Option, Poast/Plus, Select

Greater grass weed control only if grasses are actively growing from sufficient soil moisture. Control will be substantially reduced if grasses are under drought stress.
No increase in risk of crop injury from herbicide. However, the oil that is used with the herbicides may cause oil burn on the broadleaf crops.

Blazer, Cobra, Resource

Greater broadleaf weed control and grass burn.
Greater contract leaf burn on the crops.

Basagran

Greater broadleaf weed control
No crop injury. However, oil, that is used with Basagran may cause oil burn on crop leaves.

Pursuit

Excellent weed control. Weeds must not be drought stressed.
Excellent crop safety.
