Freezing Temperature Effects on Early Planted Small Grain

Soil temperatures at the Langdon Experiment Station in 1988, reached 25 degrees F at a 1 1/2 inch soil depth for a short time during cold weather. Temperatures below 2 inches deep were above 32 degrees F. Small grain seedlings are able to withstand these temperatures. Barley and wheat planted in early April at Langdon suffered no visible injury.
