Freezing Temperature Effects on Early Planted Small Grain Soil temperatures at the Langdon Experiment Station in 1988, reached 25 degrees F at a 1 1/2 inch soil depth for a short time during cold weather. Temperatures below 2 inches deep were above 32 degrees F. Small grain seedlings are able to withstand these temperatures. Barley and wheat planted in early April at Langdon suffered no visible injury. Back to Spring Frost -
