Monitor Dry Beans For Rust

Rust is favored by night temperatures in the 60's and prolonged periods of rain or dew. Many currently grown varieties of navy, cranberry, black turtle and kidney bean have moderate to good field resistance to rust but none is immune. Many new varieties of pinto bean also have good field resistance. Pink, small red and great northern varieties are susceptible.

A fungicide is needed if there are about two rust pustules per leaf and if the beans in the pod still have not developed to full size. Later in the season, if rust is severe in fields within several miles, a fungicide should be applied to fields of susceptible varieties, even if no rust has been found in the field. This is to avoid a massive rust outbreak from a major shower of spores from infected fields in the area. Following application of fungicide, continue monitoring.

Fungicides for rust control include Endura, Chlorothalonil formulations, Amistar, Quadris, and Headline. See 2004 Field Crop Fungicide guide for details at  http://www.ext.nodak.edu/extpubs/plantsci/pests/pp622w.htm
