Using Zinc Fertilizers at Corn Planting Time For whatever reason these are things you should know 1) Zinc chelates and ammoniated zincs are more efficient than broadcast zing sulfate. Because of particle size, it might take 10-30 lb/acre of zinc sulfate to give a similar yield increase as 1 quart of 10% chelate or 1 pint to 1 quart of ammoniated zinc. 2) Chelates and ammoniated zinc at those rates will not increase soil test levels and need to be used each year that a zinc sensitive crop is seeded. 3) Ammoniated zinc contains free ammonia. For that reason, limit application with the corn seed to maximum 1 quart/acre and back this down to 1 pint/acre in dry, sandy soil. 4) Chelates at 1-2 quarter/acre are safer to the seed compared with ammoniated zincs, but don't go overboard with the rates. They can injure germination. 5) Germinations risks are hugely reduced with seed and fertilizer band separation. Separation of seed and fertilizer is always the first choice, if this is possible.
