Wireworm Control in Corn Although there is no option other than seed treatment for wireworm infestations in small grains, in corn a granular insecticide can be applied in a band or in-furrow treatment at planting time. In NDSU wireworm control trials in corn conducted over a 10 year period, Counter applied in-furrow according to labeled rates has given the best stand protection. Thimet and Mocap granules are also registered as planting-time band treatments. However, if either of these insecticides is applied as a band treatment, adjust the equipment to drop granules just ahead of the press wheel, avoiding contact with the seed in the furrow. Otherwise, phytotoxicity problems can occur with either Thimet or Mocap. Other soil insecticides approved for use to control corn rootworms include: Aztec 2.1G, Force 1.5G and 3G, Fortress 2.5G and 5G, and Lorsban 15G.
