About the Club

Students of any major can join the NDSU Horticulture and Forestry Club to learn about and enjoy the art and science of growing flowers, fruits, trees, and vegetables.

Meetings are generally held twice a month in the Horticulture and Forestry Greenhouse. Old and new business is discussed and new ideas are welcomed. A room in the greenhouse belongs to the club and is used as a resource to help students learn propagation, greenhouse management, watering techniques, repotting, as well as hold inventory for various plant sales.

Dr. Harlene Hatterman-Valenti and Dr. Todd West serve as the club's advisers.

Plant Sales

Two plant sales are held during the year in which members actively participate in every aspect of the product, from planting to sale.

  • Fall Houseplant Sale (right before Thanksgiving)
  • Spring Bedding Plant Sale (the week before finals week)

Special Events

Como ParkWe try to plan trips throughout the year to places in the region we think will provide a unique learning experience for the members. Past trips have included Powell Gardens in Kansas City, MO, and Como Park Observatory.

Twice a year we celebrate our seniors by taking them out to dinner at the restaurant of their choice.

We also take part in other events, including NDSU Valentine's Ball and Expanding Your Horizons. In addition, we plan social events for club members. In the past we have gone to the circus, Thunder Road and bowling.

Scholarships

Each year the club awards two $300 scholarships to active club members with a GPA of 2.5 or higher, one to a horticulture major and one to a non-horticulture major. A faculty scholarship committee determines the winner.
