4-H Horse Events Held at NDSU Equine Center

Youth bring home honors from horse-related competitions.

Youth from across North Dakota participated in several 4-H horse-related events at North Dakota State University and the NDSU Equine Center on March 28-29.

Several youth received recognition at those events. The winners are listed by competition.

4-H Hippology Contest

The Morton County team placed first in the North Dakota hippology contest’s senior division. Team members are Morgan Henke, Brooke Heidrich, Brenna Hoger and Ashley Goldade.

The team from Grand Forks County, with members Alanna Ivers, Emily Joerger, Gretchen Ivers and Elizabeth Anderson, placed second. The Barnes County team of Mickaella Langer, Brooke McDonald, Samantha Bergrud and Makenna Knight placed third. Maria Levin, Stutsman County, had the high individual score.

In the junior division, the Ransom County team placed first. Its members are Lydia Lyons, Kasen Anderson, Kenna Sorby and Sadie Jameson. Mountrail County’s team of Abby Sigvaldsen, Logan Lapica, Calli Hennessy and Jossi Meyer placed second. In third place was the team from Golden Valley County. Members are Madison Zimdars, Jenna Hidebrandt and Samantha Oech.

Hippology is a contest of horse knowledge. Participants take a written test, identify horse-related items in a series of stations, do a team problem and judge two classes of horses.

4-H Horse Judging

The Stark-Billings County team placed first in the senior division of the 4-H horse judging contest. Team members are Alisha Dworshak, Alex Dineen, Madison Kadrmas and Tristen Polensky. The Benson County team, with members Jacob Arnold, Will Rice, Ashton Wold and Ethin Johnson, placed second. The Barnes County team of Brooke McDonald, Mickaella Langer, Makenna Knight and Samantha Bergrud placed third.

Dworshak was high individual in the contest.

The Ransom County team, with members Lydia Lyons, Sadie Jameson, Ella Reinke and Ella Wagner, won the junior division. Second place went to the Ward County team of Madilyn Berg, Maddison Cooper, Kaitlyn Berg and Haley Buck. The Oliver County team, with members Kayla Bornemann, Rebecca Schmidt, Charlie Liffrig and Amanda Huber, placed third.

Lyons was high individual in the junior division.

The horse judging contest consists of evaluating four horses for confirmation or four horse and rider combinations on their performance in a class. Participants rank them one through four and then defend their decisions in some of the classes with oral reasons.

4-H Horse Demonstrations and Public Speaking

Victoria Christensen, Stutsman County, placed first in the senior division of the North Dakota 4-H horse demonstration competition with a demonstration titled “Horse Diseases and Prevention.” Cheyenne Klein, Kidder County, placed second with her demonstration “Filly or Colt? Pregnancy Stages and Care.”

In the junior division of horse demonstrations, participants from Kidder County placed first, second and third. Kaden Strom took first with a presentation titled “Healthy Eats and Nutritious Treats.” Second place went to Morgan Dutton for a demonstration titled “More Than a Stomach Ache: Colic.” Mica Klein placed third with “Groomology.”

In the junior division team demonstrations category, Allie Bopp and Christina Mathias from Sargent County placed first with “Prep for 1st Place.” Elayna Kramlich and Tori Pfaff of Kidder County placed second with “Horse Breeds.” Kaitlyn Shockley and Jacy Bopp, Sargent County, presented “Our Barrell Racing Problems” for third place.

In the public speaking division, Emma Howey, Sargent County, presented “Kelso - 5-time winner Horse of the Year” for first place. Second place went to Samantha Schmoker, Stutsman County, for “50 Shades of Rodeo Controversy.” Victoria Levin, Stutsman County, placed third with “Who's the Athlete Now?”

Jessica Undem , Barnes County, placed first in the junior division of public speaking with “Equine Infectious Anemia.” Laura Levin, Stutsman County, took second with “Jumping Off a Perfectly Good Horse,” and third place went to Kaitlyn Berg, Ward County, for “Horses and PTSD.”

4-H Horse Quiz Bowl

The Kidder County team of Morgan Dutton, Cheyenne Klein, Kadem Strom and Ivy Starks placed first in the North Dakota 4-H horse quiz bowl’s senior division. Second place went to a team from Barnes County consisting of Mickaella Langer, Brooke McDonald, Samantha Bergrud and Makenna Knight. A team from Benson, Stutsman and Sargent counties placed third. Members are Becca Johnson, Kevin Johnson, Victoria Levin, Victoria Christensen and Emma Howey.

Langer was the high individual in the contest.

The junior division’s first place team was from Mountrail County. Team members are Abby Sigvaldsen, Logan Lapica, Calli Hennessy and Jossi Meyer. The Barnes County team, with members Jesse Undem, Hailey Schaefer, Zannika Wobbema, Harlie Storhoff and Zahr Wobbema, placed second. Third place went to the Sargent County team. Members are Christina Mathias, Jacy Bopp, Jami Bopp and Kaitlyn Shockley.

Undem placed first in the individual completion.

The quiz bowl matches teams in head-to-head competition, with teams advancing through a bracket system. Participants use a buzzer system to earn the right to answer questions.

The North Dakota 4-H Foundation sponsored awards for all of the events.
