Youth from across North Dakota participated in several 4-H horse-related events at North Dakota State University and the NDSU Equine Center near campus on April 5-6.

Several youth received recognition at those events. The winners are listed by competition.

4-H Horse Demonstrations

Emma Howey, Sargent County, placed first in the senior division of the North Dakota 4-H horse demonstration competition with a demonstration titled “What’s Bugging My Horse.” Makenna Knight, Barnes County, placed second with her demonstration, “Grooming Your Horse.”

The junior division was led by Jessie Undem, Barnes County, with a demonstration titled “Braiding of the Mane and Tail.” Maddison Cooper, Ward County, placed second with “All About Breeds,” and Madilyn Berg, Ward County, placed third with “Miles City Saddlery.”

In the junior division team demonstrations category, Kaden Strom and Morgan Dutton of Kidder County placed first with “Equine Parasites.” Kayle Goetz and Teresa Wald, also of Kidder County, placed second with their demonstration, “The Evolution of the Horse.”

Marissa Smith, Sargent County, placed first in the senior division of public speaking.

4-H Horse Quiz Bowl

The Mountrail County team of Haley Goodall, Taylor Smith, Cheyenne Leidle and Shambre Feiring placed first in the North Dakota 4-H horse quiz bowl’s senior division. Second place went to a team from Barnes County consisting of Mickaella Langer, Brooke McDonald, Breanna McDonald, Samantha Bergrud and Makenna Knight. Ward County’s team of Parker Bush, Kali Miller, Shaylee Miller and Kara Scheresky placed third.

The junior division was led by Morton County’s team of Ashley Goldade, Morgan Henke, Brooke Heidrich and Brenna Hoger. A team from Benson/Stutsman counties placed second. Team members are Will Rice, Kevin Johnson, Charity Dosch and Laura Levin. Kidder County’s team of Morgan Dutton, Ivy Starks, Kaden Strom and Teresa Wald placed third.

The quiz bowl matched teams in head-to-head competition, with teams advancing through a bracket system. Participants used a buzzer system to earn the right to answer questions.

4-H Hippology Contest

Grand Forks placed first in the North Dakota hippology contest’s senior division. Team members are Sarah Hoiland, Alanna Ivers and Emily Joerger. Ward County’s team of Shaylee Miller, Kali Miller, Parker Bush and Kara Scheresky placed second. Barnes County’s team of Samantha Bergrud, Makenna Knight, Breanna McDonald and Mickaella Langer placed third.

The junior division was led by the Morton County team of Morgan Henke, Ashley Goldade, Brooke Heidrich and Brenna Hoger. Mountrail County’s team of Calli Hennessy, Jossi Meyer, Logan Lapica and Abby Sigvaldsen placed second. The Mercer County team of Torie Horning, Tia Horning and Kylee Grabow was third.

Hippology is a contest of horse knowledge. Participants take a written test, identify horse-related items in a series of stations, do a team problem and judge two classes of horses.

4-H Horse Judging

Ward County placed first in the senior division of the 4-H horse judging contest. Team members are Kara Scheresky, Shaylee Miller and Kali Miller. The Stark-Billings County team of Alisha Dworshak, Skyler Dockter, Miranda Gustafson and Tristen Polensky placed second. The Barnes County team of Samantha Bergrud, Breanna McDonald, Brooke McDonald and Mickaella Langer placed third.

Barnes County led the junior division with team members Alexa Uecker, Hailey Schaeffer, Jessie Undem and Maddie Knight. Second place went to the Sargent County team of Emily Hampton, Emma Gulleson, Hannah Siemieniewski and Ali Gulleson. Ward County placed third with team members Madilyn Berg, Kaitlyn Berg and Maddison Cooper.

Awards for all of the events were sponsored by the North Dakota 4-H Foundation.
