Field Day Set for July 13 at NDSU's Dickinson Research Extension Center

Producers from North Dakota, Montana and South Dakota are expected to be on hand for the annual North Dakota State University Dickinson Research Extension Center field day Wednesday, July 13.

Activities will take place at the DREC headquarters and the Dickinson Recreation Center at the corner of Empire Road and State Avenue in Dickinson.

"Agriculture is changing and our program reflects the shifts that are occurring," says Frank Kutka, DREC assistant director. "I would like to invite everybody to participate in our field day, which is our annual open house."

The day begins at 8 a.m. with coffee and donuts. A variety plot trials tour follows from 9 to 11:45 a.m. Crops featured will be barley, durum wheat, oats, and spring and winter wheat. A garden and ornamental diagnostic clinic will be held from 9 a.m. to noon at the Recreation Center. Information on collecting plant samples for diagnosis will be featured from noon to 12:20 p.m., followed by discussions on current field crop disease concerns and managing sawflies.

A lunch sponsored by local businesses will be served at the Recreation Center from 1 to 2 p.m.

Afternoon activities at the Recreation Center will center on field crop diagnostics. An afternoon tour at the DREC will look at the impact of tillage on soil quality in a barley and corn rotation, myth busting crop residue management and preceding crop impacts on barley variety performance.

From 5 to 7 p.m., the center will host the annual ag barbecue, which is sponsored by local businesses and the Dickinson Chamber of Commerce.

Water quality sample collections will be taken from 9 to 11:45 a.m. and again from 2 to 3 p.m. by Roxanne Johnson, NDSU Extension Service water quality associate. Samples should be collected in any clean plastic bottle capable of holding 15 to 20 ounces.
