Lamb Cookoff Contestants Wanted

The purpose of the contest is to share recipes and ideas for cooking lamb and demonstrate how easy and versatile lamb can be.

The North Dakota Lamb and Wool Producers Association will be holding the second annual Lamb Cookoff in conjunction with its annual convention and meeting. The cookoff will take place Friday, Nov. 20, at the Doublewood Inn in Bismarck. Judging takes place beginning at 7 p.m. The coveted, “People’s Choice” award will be judged immediately following the cookoff judging.

“The purpose of the contest is to share recipes and ideas for cooking lamb and demonstrate how easy and versatile lamb can be,” says Chris Shauer, North Dakota State University Hettinger Research Extension Center director. “Ultimately, the hope is that more people will eat lamb more often.”

“Many people enjoy lamb only for holidays, such as Mother’s Day or Easter, but lamb is a great choice for people year around,” says Anne Osborne, cookoff committee member and lamb producer from Wimbledon.

The North Dakota Lamb and Wool Producers Association (NDLWPA) is encouraging entries from anyone who likes to cook, not just from lamb producers. All cooks are welcome and the NDLWPA is hoping to get entries from nonlamb producers as well as lamb producers who will be attending the convention.

Lamb entries to the contest will be in one of three categories: easy and economical, fancy and fabulous or youth. Prizes will be awarded for the top two places in each division. For official rules and an entry form, go to the North Dakota Lamb and Wool Producers Web site at www.ndlwpa.com. Osborne can be contacted at (701) 435-2927 or e-mail daosborne@starband.net. Entries are due Nov. 15. There is no entry fee for the contest.

Last year’s winner of the fancy and fabulous category was Dorothy Duhr, a Bismarck cook who does not raise lambs. Duhr’s crown rack of lamb roast impressed the judges and secured first place and the prize of a Holland portable grill.
