New Publication Helps Find Energy Waste

The North Dakota State University Extension Service has a new publication to help homeowners determine whether their home is wasting energy.

“The Top Ten Home Energy Checklist (AE-1442)” enables homeowners to save money and energy by providing tips on energy-related topics, including whether their foundation, ceiling and walls are insulated adequately; setting back thermostats; locating air leaks; determining whether to replace their furnace or windows; how much energy they’re wasting by heating water; the efficiency of their lighting; whether they have Energy Star-rated appliances; and how landscaping and personal habits can minimize energy use.

Energy savings can be significant, according to Carl Pedersen, NDSU Extension energy educator and the author of the publication.

“For example, many homes still have outdated draft inverter furnaces that are, at best, 60 percent efficient,” he says. “That means that 40 percent of the heating bill each year is wasted to the outside.”
