Beef Production Day Set for Jan. 20

Beef production issues will be the topic of a program at NDSU’s North Central Research Extension Center on Jan. 20.

North Dakota State University’s North Central Research Extension Center near Minot is hosting a 2009 Beef Production Day at the center Jan. 20.

The event will run from 5 to 8 p.m.

Speakers and their topics are:

  • Farm bill concerns for the cattleman – Grant Buck, Farm Service Agency, Minot
  • Using precipitation insurance to protect range and pasture – Becky Braaten, Farm Credit Services, Bottineau
  • Rising cost of production and price outlook for 2009 – Tim Petry, NDSU livestock marketing economist
  • Using corn byproducts to stretch feed supplies – Greg Lardy, NDSU beef cattle specialist
  • Plan now for late-fall grazing – Kevin Sedivec, NDSU range management specialist
  • What beef producers can do to attract calf buyers – regional market operators and calf buyers

The program also will include a free beef supper and beef hoop barn presentation. A representative from Hoop Beef System, Vermillion, S.D., will explain how hoop barns are being used for confinement cattle feeding in the Midwest and northern Great Plains.

The event is free of charge and no registration is necessary.

The North Central Research Extension Center is a mile south of Minot on U.S. Highway 83.
