Master Gardener Program

Expectations from Master Gardeners

Your Master Gardener training will consist of a minimum of 32 hours of classroom training from professionals in their respective fields. Upon completion of this course, you will be well schooled in the basics of pant and soil science, plant pathology, entomology, and weed control. You will also have received information on woody plants and herbaceous plants, aspects of fruit, vegetable, and herb gardening, plant propagation, landscape design, landscape maintenance, houseplant care, and turfgrass management. The in-class time will be augmented with about 10-12 hours of homework assignments.

You will be able to apply all this practical learning in assisting the county extension office by volunteering your time when needed on horticulturally based matters. These would include, but not be limited to:

  • Answer gardening questions
  • Assist the county extension office staff
  • Conduct garden tours
  • Coordinate Master Gardener Programs
  • Conduct school gardening programs
  • Assist in the creation and maintenance of demonstration gardens
  • Make home garden visits
  • Give talks to groups interested in horticulture
  • Assist in the 4-H programs
  • Work on special events

Once a total of 48 hours of approved volunteer work is completed, the trainee will then receive the Master Gardener Certificate from North Dakota State University. This certification remains valid when the Master Gardener attends a minimum of eight hours of updated advanced training each year. The title of NDSU Master Gardener can be used only by individuals trained to assist NDSU Cooperative Extension.

The NDSU Master Gardener title can be used in seeking employment, but in no commercial manner that endorses the individual, products or services. Certified Master Gardener shirts may be available to those who wish to make such a purchase upon completion of their training program.

In providing unbiased information as a public service, the NDSU Master Gardener program benefits everyone involved. The public profits by being able to talk with knowledgeable gardeners first hand, receiving information from people who would not be promoting any particular products or services.

Welcome to the Master Gardener Program, maintained by the NDSU Extension Service! I hope your Master Gardening experiences bring zest, health, and new meaning to your life!
