Planting Date: April 29 Previous Crop:
Wheat Seed Rate: 17 viable seeds/ft2
Seed Treatment: None except as sent Soil Type: Soil Test: Fertilizer Applied: Nitrogen Yield Goal:
Row Spacing: 7 inches Harvest Date:
Varied
General Observations: Stands were
variable due to crusting and possibly some insect damage. Uneven emergence made
it difficult to take flowering and maturity notes, so only days to 10% flower
are reported. There was hail damage on June 19th. The Polish
varieties were more damaged than the Argentine, as they were nearing the
completion of flowering when the hail occurred. Seed yields were adjusted for %
stand by covariance analysis.

Roseau
Planting Date: April 30 Previous Crop:
Wheat 1995, 96, 97 Seeding Rate: 12 viable
seeds/ft2 Seed Treatment: Gaucho and
Benlate Soil Type: Sandy clay loam Soil Test: 74-14-230-17 N-P-K-S Fertilizer
Applied: 85-50-40-20 N-P-K-S Yield Goal: 2400
lbs/a Row Spacing: 6 inch - 10 rows Harvest Date: August 10,14, 20
General Observations: The Roseau
location looked good this year considering the amount of stress. First,
quackgrass and Canada thistle patches needed to be
controlled with herbicides early in the season. Secondly, the weather in June
was very cold and wet. Yields were lower than expected at the Roseau location,
mostly due to the wet conditions.
Crookston Planting Date: April
24 Previous Crop: Wheat Seeding Rate: 12 viable seeds/ft2 Seed Treatment: Gaucho and Benlate Soil Type:
Clay loam Soil Test: 65-38-260-66; N-P-K-S
Fertilizer Applied: 80-25-0-15; N-P-K-S in the fall
Yield Goal: 2400 lbs/a Row Spacing: 6
inch -10 rows Harvest Date: August 7, 12,
19
General Observations: The Crookston
location looked good throughout the season and achieved very good yields. The
site was planted into relatively dry conditions, which resulted in two emergence
times about a week apart. Flower notes were taken on the first emergence.
However, by the end of the season, there was little distinguishable difference
in maturity within the plot.
Kennedy
Planting Date: April 24 Previous Crop:
Wheat Seeding Rate: 12 viable
seeds/ft2 Seed Treatment: Gaucho and
Benlate Soil Type: Clay loam Soil Test: 63-4-317-360; N-P-K-S Fertilizer
Applied: 80-0-0-15 Fall N-P-K-S; 0-16-0-0 Spring Yield
Goal: 2200 lbs/a Row Spacing: 6 inch -10 rows
Harvest Date: September 5, 12, 20
General Observations: The Kennedy
location looked good this year. While end trimming the plots early in the season
with Roundup, some of the chemical drifted onto the plots. Some plants on the
ends of the plots were injured. Injury notes were taken about a week after end
trimming and again at swathing time. Plots with injured plants on the edges of
the plot were shortened to remove the injury, and plots with more than 1/3 of
the plot damaged were not used for yield data. Thus, with these adjustments,
yield data should still be representative for each variety. All other notes were
taken from the uninjured portions of the plots. Modifications to the sprayer are
planned for this winter to avoid future problems with drift.
Kennedy - Roundup Ready
Planting Date: April 28 Previous Crop:
Wheat Seeding Rate: 12 viable
seeds/ft2 Seed Treatment: Gaucho and
Benlate Soil Type: Clay loam Soil Test: None taken Fertilizer Applied:
14-0-0-90-30-0-15 Yield Goal: 2200 lbs/a
Row Spacing: 6 inch -10 rows Harvest
Date: August 5, 20
General Observations The site was
seeded into dry conditions with heavy wheat residue. Timely rains provided for
even emergence. Some pod abortion was observed midway through the season from
hot dry conditions.
Fosston
Planting Date: May 4 Previous Crop:
Wheat Seeding Rate: 12 viable
seeds/ft2 Seed Treatment: Gaucho and
Benlate Soil Type: Clay loam Soil Test: 30-8-128-6; N-P-K-S Fertilizer
Applied: 80-30-30-20; N-P-K-S in the spring Yield Goal:
2000 lbs/a Row Spacing: 6 inch -10 rows
Harvest Date: August 14, 21
General Observations: The Fosston
location looked good this year. The plants were just emerging at this site when
a heavy thunderstorm came through the area and caused a lot of soil to wash into
the press wheel markings and cover some of the cotyledons. This resulted in a
decreased stand for replicates 1 and 3, which were in the lower area of the
site. Stand reductions appeared uniform within each replicate. The reduced
stands did not appear to affect yield as the canola plants branched to fill the
gaps.
No weather data available for Fosston.

Morris
Planting Date: April 30, 1998 Seeding
Rate: 12 viable seeds per square foot Previous Crop:
'97 wheat Seed Treatment: Goucho and Benlate
Soil Type: Silt Loam Soil Test: all
#/A None taken Fertilizer Applied: 120-46-60-0;
N-P-K-S Yield Goal: 2000 lbs/A Row Spacing: 7 inch - 8 rows Harvest Dates:
August 11
General Trial observations: The Morris
location looked good this year with good emergence and good growth. A
miscommunication at planting resulted in only 5' alleyways, which did not allow
for swathing all the varieties at the optimum time. To keep from losing the
early varieties to shattering, some of the late maturing varieties were swathed
before physiological maturity. Seven varieties were discarded due to being
swathed too early. These include LA 161, LA 269, Global, CL 2070, CL 2078, Oscar
and Crusher. The performance of these varieties is not reported and the
companies that submitted them will receive credit for testing at Morris in

Hettinger
Planting Date: April 14 and 28 Previous Crop: Fallow Seed Treatment: Furadan
CR-10 Seeding Rate: 7.5 lbs/a B.napus and 4.5 lbs/a
B.rapa Soil Type: Silty loam Soil Test: 108-56-1050-S198 Fertilizer Applied:
100 lbs/a gypsum Yield Goal: 2000 lbs/a
Row Spacing: 7 inches Harvest Date:
July 31
General Observations: The trial was
split into two trials due to the fact that that all the seed was not received
before the optimum planting time. Rather than risk the entire trial, the seed on
hand on April 14 was planted and the remaining entries were seeded two weeks
later. Early season growing conditions were almost ideal with mild temperatures
and adequate moisture. An unusual killing frost occurred on June 3. The Polish
varieties were in full bloom and most other varieties were just beginning to
initiate flowering. As the season progressed, hot and dry conditions set in
causing lower test weights and reduced yield, especially late planted
varieties.
Carrington
Planting Date: April 29 Previous Crop:
Winter Rye Seeding Rate: 17 PLS/ft2
Seed Treatment: Furadan CR10 to non-Gaucho treated
entries Soil Type: Heimdahl silt loam Soil Test: 50 lbs/a, 20 ppm, 340 ppm, 8 ppm, N-P-K-S Fertilizer Applied: 100 lbs/a N + 125 lbs/a ammonium sulfate
Yield Goal: 2500 lbs/a Row Spacing: 7
inches Harvest Date: July 20 - August 10
General Observations: Excellent stand
establishment (uniform and fairly quick). Slightly longer than normal vegetative
growth period followed by somewhat short blooming period. No rain from July 4 to
harvest. At physiological maturity plants turned from green to tan very quickly.
Pod wall color was not necessarily indicative of seed color.

August 27 - September 2
General Observations: Two days after
the trial was seeded 3.34 inches of rainfall was received. A crust developed and
caused some stand reductions. Visual stand ratings were recorded. There were a
few varieties that had poor stands in all replications indicating that they do
not perform very well under a crusting condition. Varieties with poor stands
tended to have lower yields but not in all instances which suggests that some
varieties have the ability to compensate in low stand situations better than
other varieties.
Row Spacing: 6 inches Harvest Date:
September 26
General Observations: The seedbed was
quite dry when planting, and emergence was very uneven. Notes taken from each
plot indicated an average of only 38% of the plots emerged from the first flush.
Adequate rainfall to germinate the remaining seeds did not fall until the third
week of June. After this time stands from the entire plot were good but there
were big differences in growth stages. These differences were not as evident at
harvest. Because of the uneven development, notes on flowering and maturity were
not taken.
