Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering Services
Mission: Industrial engineering has a unique focus, as well as extraordinary breath. The primary idea is to apply systematic, disciplines, engineered thinking to all types of human enterprise. Often this means applying lessons that have been hard won in the industrial sector to service oriented enterprises, such as healthcare, transportation and government. Often, advancements in quality, cost effectiveness and timeliness that have been learned in the crucible of global industrial competition can be extended to service providers. Industrial engineers are the people who do this.

Research, Laboratory and Testing Service - This department also features three laboratories equipped with the latest technology

Capstone Projects: Real world client projects serve as the workload for the course, and the student project teams are assigned to the various projects. The purpose of the project teams is to study their client's problems, develop alternative solutions, and propose implementation strategies. Each year project ideas are solicited from area industries. Although there is no deadline for when potential clients should contact the department, it is highly recommended that it be done no later than one month before the spring semester. Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE) -This is about outreach. NDSU SIFE does outreach projects that have influence on students, from the elementary level on up through college, and those in the general business community. SIFE educates people about free enterprise by teaching them about business plans, retirement opportunities, responsible business practices, and much more. SIFE has served as a liaison between successful professional business leaders and students. SIFE has taught elementary school to college age students about free enterprise through mentoring, workshops, and seminars.

Kathleen is the director of the NDSU Extension Center for Community Vitality and an Extension Specialist in Community Economic Development in the Department of Agribusiness and Applied Economics. Kathleen is the state coordinator for youth entrepreneurship program called Mini-Society. North Dakota has between 400 and 700 youth participating in school and after school programs in youth entrepreneurship each year. She is also a founding director and past president of Business Retention and Expansion International. Her special areas of interest include business retention and expansion, community strategic planning, the creation of rural business opportunities, customer service research and development, e-commerce, entrepreneurship and leadership development. Kathy works with faculty and others to coordinate research, teaching and outreach to assist individuals and community leaders interested in community vitality. Kathleen received both her B.S. and M.B.A. from the University of North Dakota.

His industry involvement includes design of products and tooling, manufacturing processes and plant layout, product testing, quality, supplier/customer relations, ISO 9000, operations, and management. Reuben received extensive technical and management training in his 33 years of employment at IBM, staying abreast of technological and human resource changes. While employed at IBM, Reuben spent 17 years in management of New Products Introduction, Manufacturing Engineering, Test Engineering, Operations, and Quality Engineering of Mid-Range Computer Systems and Computer Storage Products. Reuben has a B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from NDSU.

Community Resources and Economic Development - Defining community can be difficult, as community means different things to different people. Community development is not the same as community growth or expansion. The role of community development is to accomplish the community's purpose, or why it exists, with quality and balance. This is done with the larger communities in mind and is the responsibility of all residents of the community. North Dakota State University sees itself as part of the community of North Dakota. University Programs to Stimulate Industry-University Collaboration

North Dakota Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) -North Dakota ESPCoR is a North Dakota University System program aimed at building an exemplary research infrastructure, developing human resources and increasing technology transfer from universities to the commercial sector. North Dakota ESPCoR is open to student and faculty at all state university system campuses and Tribally Controlled Community Colleges.

ND EPSCoR supports a three-fold mission 1) To be a driving force in the building of a strong research infrastructure in North Dakota (EPSCoR-sponsored programs in North Dakota); 2) To increase opportunities for students and faculty to develop their research capabilities (Science Outreach and Recruitment Awards) 3) To develop strong linkages with business and industries in North Dakota (Technology Transfer).

Technology Transfer Programs interaction between academic researchers and industry provides benefits to businesses and companies, the economy of the state and nation, and improves academic teaching and learning. In response to recognized state and national needs for improving technology transfer, ND EPSCoR operates three program:
Students in Technology Transfer and Research (STTAR This is a work placement program, matching upper division North Dakota State University System students with the North Dakota firms. The company pays at least half of the student salary.

Faculty in technology Transfer (FITT) The purpose of FITT is to help businesses and companies address problems that require faculty-level expertise in science, engineering, and mathematics.

Phase O Technology Research Into Commercialization (Phase O-TRIC) - The TRIC award is used to obtain data leading to a "proof of concept" that the proposed research had merit for commercialization. Awardees write and submit at least one grant proposal to the federal Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) of Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) Phase 1 grant programs.

Where to get technical training:

The goal of the North Dakota Workforce Training System is to provide business and industry in North Dakota with the most competitive workforce in the nation.

This goal is being met by implementing a model developed by the Task Force on Workforce Development and Training. Development of the model was coordinated by the Greater North Dakota Association using the best practices of Workforce Training Systems. The model has the following characteristics:

North Dakota State College of Science (NDSCS)- Wahpeton, ND

The North Dakota workforce training legislation assigned NDSCS the responsibility of working with the businesses and industries in the southeast region to help them address their training needs. The southeast region encompasses 15 counties and spans roughly the area from the South Dakota border north to Mayville, ND and west from Minnesota border to Harvey, ND in the north and Ashley, ND in the south.

NDSCS College Outreach along with the Skills and Technology Training Center, have regional and statewide access to many professional and industry certified trainers, consultants, and equipment. We offer contracted and tailored designed training, workshops, seminars and open enrollment classes to keep developing employees' skills and abilities. Training is provided on-site or at our facilities in the areas of technical training, computers, quality standards and employee development.

The focus of the STTC is growing primary sector business by increasing worker productivity which elevates personal income and grows our state's economy.

e-Business Assistance Services

e-business refers to all the business processes that take place across electronic networks. e-Commerce covers the outward facing processes that touch customers, suppliers and external partners. This includes sales, order taking, marketing delivery and customer service. e-Business includes e-commerce, but it also references the internal processes such as production, customer relationship management, inventory management, product development, finance and human resources. Computer Assistance Services:

IBID can help with questions regarding computer systems, networks, communications, hardware and software. IBID helps North Dakota businesses, existing and startups, improve their competitiveness by providing access to the technical assistance resources at NDSU thereby helping to solve specific technical questions or needs. These services are provided on a confidential basis. IBID working in close cooperation with the NDSU Information Technology Services and the NDSU Computer Science Department can help you with your questions and e-business needs.

IBID has partnered with Soft Select Systems, a technology research firm, to assist our clients in the process of selecting the appropriate software package for their business.

What We Will Do

IBID assistance will be prompt and one-on-one. All proprietary information will be held confidential. If it is a questions beyond our expertise or scope, we will refer you to other resources. After we provide the assistance, we will send you a brief evaluation survey to determine your satisfaction and the economic impact of our assistance.

Cost

Initial interviews and services are provided without charge. If the project requires major research or investment, a cost proposal will be prepared. Agreement on cost will be made before extended services are provided. If information is located from a source which charges a fee, we will provide you with information on how to purchase the information.
