Program Delivery
FNP agents or assistants will be recruited to fill FNP vacancies. These persons are employed primarily for teaching educational programs appropriate to the project, for recruiting participants and for networking with appropriate community and food assistance programs.
Program delivery methods may include, but are not limited to:
- direct teaching, individually or in groups
- mass media efforts to develop awareness, understanding, and involvement in the educational program
- newsletters
- single concept fact sheets
- basic food and nutrition demonstrations at sites where supplemental nutrition assistance program participants frequent such as;
- offices of agencies/organizations that target low-income populations
- food pantries
- commodity food distribution sites
- schools/classrooms with at least 50% enrollment eligible for free or reduced-price meals
The FNP Nutrition Education Assistant/Agent is encouraged to recruit participants through referrals and through participation in other community and food assistance program activities. Referral of participants to other Extension programs and to other community and food assistance programs, such as the Special Supplemental Food Program for Women, Infants and Children program (WIC), will be the responsibility of all Extension professionals and Nutrition Education Assistants/Agents.
Close coordination with the county social services staff is a vital part of program planning, recruitment and delivery.
Recording Sessions for FNP Report of Activities
For narrative reporting purposes count planned, prepared and delivered educational sessions this way:
- Group session – (more than one participant): count each as 1 session
- Individual: count as 1 session
- Health Fairs / Food Pantries / Foot Clinics / WIC / Commodity Distribution sites: count as 1 session
Examples follow:
- You are going to an elementary school and doing a program in the 1st grade room, the 2nd grade room and the 4th grade room (all different sessions). Record 3 sessions.
- You are going to an elementary school and doing a program in the 1st grade room, the 2nd grade room and the 4th grade room (all the same session, except modified to be age appropriate for each age). Record 3 sessions.
- You are setting up a display table and taste testing at the local food pantry. You stay with the booth for ½ of the day and field questions and give samples to 25 people. Record 1 session.
- You give a lesson on shopping tips for Head Start parents in three different communities on three different days. Record 3 sessions.
- You have a lesson prepared for the five food pantries in your county. You are giving them over the next couple of weeks. Record 5 sessions.
- You see WIC clients in a one-to-one format. This month you saw clients for parts of two days. Record 2 sessions.
- You participate in a health fair by putting up a booth. Record information on this booth in section 7.b. of the FNP Report of Activities.
