Lentil is a poor weed competitor. This is because it is a short crop and does not form a dense canopy until after flowering, so most annual grass and broadleaf weed species can compete effectively with lentil at any time throughout the growing season. Volunteer grains can pose a serious problem to lentil, reducing yields even at low densities.
Cultural control: Results from cultural weed control are highly variable. The level of weed control achieved is primarily dependent on environmental conditions and stage of weed growth. Growers can achieve some control by one or two pre-emergent harrowing operations following seeding. This will improve the kill of winter annuals and firm and smooth the seedbed, but often leaves the field vulnerable to erosion.
You can obtain the best cultural control by using preventative measures such as:
effective weed control during
summerfallow years
selecting a weed-free field and shallow tillage in problem areas prior
to seeding
using clean seed
Do not plant lentils when there is the possibility of injury due to herbicide carryover.
