Depending on the way solar systems capture and convert solar energy they can be considered passive or active systems. Passive systems use the sun's rays and radiation to directly heat objects whereas active systems convert that energy into other types of energy, such as using a photovoltaic panel to convert radiant energy into electrical energy. The links below provide information on both types of systems as well as information on tax incentives for installation of solar systems.

Energy Savings

Farming and ranching can be energy intensive operations but reducing those energy uses may require a little investigation. The energy uses with the greatest potential for savings on a farm are in livestock housing, grain drying and irrigation. The North Dakota State University extension Service developed a Farmstead Energy Audit that provides information on areas on a farm or ranch to look for energy savings. Field operations use considerable fuel and the best way to reduce energy use is to reduce the number of passes through the field with conservation tillage practices.

Agricultural Machinery

Energy savings in agricultural machinery can be accomplished in a variety of ways. The NDSU Ag Machinery page provides a wide variety on information on efficient farming using the newest technology.

Farm Energy Production

The BioFuels page provides a wealth of information about ethanol and biodiesel production and the crops that are used in the process.

Lighting:

The best way to save money and natural resources is to not use energy. The simplest way to reduce energy with lighting is to turn lights off when not in use. For lights that are being used, ensure energy-efficient light bulbs are installed. Compact fluorescent light bulbs use up to 75 percent less energy than incandescent bulbs and last much longer. Use natural lighting when possible. Homeowners pay for the watts used, so the lower the watt rating on lighting devices, the less they have to pay to use them.

Energy Audits:

The NDSU Extension service has developed a procedure where homeowners can do their own basic energy audit using an infrared thermometer. By following along with some tips provided in the publication Determining Insulation and Air Infiltrations Levels Using an Infrared Thermometer and the accompanying questionnaire a homeowner can find sources of air leaks as well as basic ideas of insulation levels in a home.
