Experience Agriculture!

Agriculture is this regions most important industry, but with fewer farms and even fewer farmers, not many children have first-hand experience with agriculture.  Many young people no longer have direct ties to the land, have never been on a farm and have no concept of our regions rich agricultural heritage.  Even in North Dakota, many youth do not fully understand where food originates or the processes involved in getting it to the dinner table.  Several groups believe its vital to give children a new link to understanding the industry that supports us all, and for several years have planned a special day for youth and agriculture.

Experience Agriculture Special Assignment Pizza, developed by the ND Farm Bureau, was held April 6 and 7 at the Memorial building in Devils Lake. Participating students were able to pry into the puzzle of how raw products from North Dakota are transformed into a food that young people can identify with Pizza. The event focused on hands-on learning, and students were involved in a number of learning and activity booths that made the agriculture industry come alive.

The activity booths were manned by staff from the states commodity groups, NDSU Extension Service offices in Benson, Cavalier, Nelson, Ramsey, Rolette and Towner Counties, the ND Farm Bureau, the Ramsey County Fair Board, and other interested volunteers.  Attending from Towner County were students from Rocklake and Bisbee-Egeland.
