Towner County 4-H Newsletter

January 2005

Banquet Review
Congratulations to all members and clubs on completion of another successful 4-H year.  We had over 80 people in attendance at our November banquet, and many awards given out.  Thanks again to all our premium sponsors, caterers, and clubs for their donations and time, and to everyone who helped make this years banquet another success!

Corrina Koehn and Karly Held show off their banner club award.

   Hungry eaters at the banquet!

We also had two reports at the banquet from Greta Thomas and Bobby Wolsky on their Extension Youth Conference (EYC) trip taken in June.  Enclosed is information on the 2005 conference. As a reminder, EYC is open to any young person aged 13-18 (do not have to be a 4-H member).  We are excited that we have 5 Towner County 4-Hers interested in attending this year!  Greta and Becca Thomas, Rachel Held, Nicole Jacobson, and Kayla Ebensteiner.  The registration booklet will be sent to these members when it becomes available. The Towner County 4-H council will be able to pay a portion of the estimated $140 costs.  We hope clubs and family members will be able to think of other creative ways to help fund this great trip!

4-H Shooting Sports/Sportsfishing Training
Due to inclimate weather, Ramsey County has rescheduled their shooting sports/sportsfishing training to February 4-5.  The shooting sports training will cover archery and rifle, registration cost is $45, and costs for two Towner County volunteers will be paid by a generous grant from the Towner County Crop Improvement Board. The fishing sports training will be held Saturday, Feb 5, beginning at 8am, and registration fees will also be covered by the crop improvement board grant.   Both of these trainings will be held in the Memorial Building in Devils Lake.  If anyone is interested in these opportunities, please call our office @968-4361 or register directly to Ramsey County: 662-7027, or ramsey@ndsuext.nodak.edu.

 Aerospace Program
Enclosed is a brochure for the Aerospace program to be held April 17-18, 2005 at the UND Aerospace Center. Any youth age 12-15 can attend, and must be accompanied by a chaperone.  Registration deadline is April 6.  Check out the webpage: http://www.ext.nodak.edu/4h/programs/aerospaceevent/aerospace_event.htm

 Communication Arts
Enclosed are changes to the communication arts program, effective immediately!  The changes are minor:  the Interpretive Reading category is now divided into two categories (humorous and serious) instead of one, dress code is necessary for District Communication Arts participants (Towner County participants have always worn the correct dress code) EXCEPT if a presentation is in the Dramatic or Commercial categories where costumes are allowed, and students are encouraged NOT to use speeches previously used in school speech contests.  Check out the webpage: http://www.ext.nodak.edu/4h/programs/commArts.htm

 Needs Assessment
Please review the enclosed letter from Nels Peterson, Nelson County Extension Agent, and Brenda Langerud, Ramsey County Extension Agent.  They wish to have 3-5 participants from each area county participate in a meeting to develop a road map for 4-H.  Any leader, member or parent is invited to attend.  Please call the numbers on the enclosed letter if you are interested in attending.

 Winter Show
The North Dakota Winter Show will be March 1-6 in Valley City.  Now is a good time for 4-H members to prepare a crop exhibit for the State Crop Show.  In addition to the premiums by the NDWS, the North Dakota Barley Council will be offering a $100 prize for the 4-H club (or individual members) that enter the most eligible samples of barley.  The North Dakota Winter Show Foundation has also announced two $250 scholarships will be awarded to youth with plans to attend a North Dakota college or university to pursue a bachelors degree leading to a career in agriculture.  Scholarship application form, and all Winter Show information is available at: http://www.northdakotawintershow.com/

 Web address change
Please check out the new web address for Towner County Extension: http://www.ag.ndsu.edu/county/towner/. There are some blips in the system, and everything didnt transfer 100% to the new address, but with time, we hope to have everything updated and looking better. Bookmark this site, and be sure to send any suggestions for content, or pictures you would like included to: towner@ndsuext.nodak.edu.

 State Fair
Its never too early to begin thinking about the State Fair!  Enclosed is the 4-H schedule.  State Fair books will not be available until later this spring.

 Spring Council Meeting
The Towner County 4-H council will meet March 21, 7pm at the Extension Office meeting room.

Sincerely,
Gayle Gette, Extension/FNP Agent
