STATUS OF 4-H IN STEELE COUNTY:

There are five 4-H clubs in Steele County, namely, Country Blossoms, Country Harvest, Dakota Sky Riders, Handy Helpers, and 4-H promoters.  There are a total of 48 youth members in the 4-H program; there are 34 female and 19 male club members.  About 96% of 4-H participants are non-Hispanic and 4% are Hispanic.  There are 39 farm families active in the 4-H program.  There are 14 female volunteers and 3 male volunteers in the program bringing the total number to 17.  In 2007, there were 38 projects categorized as communications and expressive arts, 30 projects in consumer and family sciences, 37 projects in healthy lifestyle education, nine projects in personal development, 43 animal science projects, and 17 science and technology projects.  There was only one project out of 174 projects that related to plant science. There were no environmental science and entomology projects.  It appears that greater impetus should be given in future on science projects and scientific skills which is also mandated by the National 4-H Science, Engineering, and Technology (SET) Project.
