4-H COUNCIL MEETING MINUTES

JANUARY 29, 2001

Members present were at the Law Enforcement Center were: Karen Weber, Joan Beyer, Tammy Miller, Rhonda Weeda, Linda Narum, Deb Evenson and Anita Onchuck.

Because of the absence of a quorum, no official business was done, but several items on the agenda were discussed.

Karen Weber and Anita Onchuck, delegates to the North Dakota State Fair meeting in Bismarck, reported that the meeting was interesting, but not worth sending delegates. No decisions were made, just information. The NDSF will be held July 20-28, 2001.

The horse surveys were mailed out and are waiting for more to come in.

Mike McKibbon was called and told not to come because of the small number at the meeting. Concerns brought up regarding having Richland County 4-H at the Wilkin County Fair were livestock, gardening, crops, etc.

The cash flow report of 8/1/00 through 1/29/01 was distributed and discussed. Mini-grant fund will continue through this 4-H year and then that money could be directed somewhere else. Not enough 4-H members utilizing that fund. A lot of money is being spent on awards--trophies, medallions and plaques. Maybe medallions could replace trophies if they are a lot cheaper.

Sponsors of Awards Night and Achievement Days should be recognized better, maybe a "4-H Donor" sticker.

The question was brought up if we are getting back from the 4-H Foundation what we put in as a county. About $1200 is donated to the Foundation a year, out of that Richland County gets about $300 back. Should we be asking people to donate directly to Richland County 4-H instead of to the 4-H Foundation?

The 4-H rummage sale was discussed. Two dates were brought up--April 28 or May 5. The armory will have to called regarding either of these dates. The rummage sale will be open to the public to donate and we will give receipts. The money from the rummage sale will be used to do something in the community, maybe at the zoo. A rummage sale committee was formed: Joan Beyer, Rhonda Weeda, Deb Evenson, Linda Narum and Karen Weber.

The Twyla Gast Agriculture Trip to NDSU was approved. The bus will be $200, lunch-$140, and skating-$120. There is $500 in the fund to be used. Maybe a Twyla Gast Agriculture Trip sticker could be put on the projects exhibited at Achievement Days.

Family Fun and Fitness Day was discussed, maybe to try it again next fall.

A 4-H picnic this summer was discussed. It could be incorporated with a community service at the park or the zoo.

Karen Weber brought up the community service portion of the awards forms. Should an activity done many times over be counted and given points for every time it is done? Kids should be taught that doing a service again and again is a good thing. It was mentioned that points should be given for hours of community service. Maybe there should be a Community Service Award at Awards Night.

Sewing kits were discussed. Maybe there should be a "kit" lot for exhibiting at Achievement Days. Kit items do not require as much preparation skill and the 4-H'er does not learn as much.

Next meeting will be Monday, April 16, 2001.

Respectfully submitted,

Deb Evenson
Stand-in Secretary
