What is the 21st Century Community Learning
  Centers Project?

The 21st Century Community Learning Center is currently serving K-6 grade students on a daily basis. Students are offered a wide array of opportunities, with homework assistance and tutoring its top priority to enrich language arts, math, and science. The program is in operation between the hours of 3:30 pm and 6:00 pm - Monday through Friday. The students are offered a nutritious snack and allowed to go outdoors for some physical activity before settling into the program. The Learning Center maintains a student to staff ratio of 10:1 to ensure success for all participants.

We are now school age child care certified!

Activities and Partnerships
Activities incorporated in the program emphasize social service, recreational and cultural programs, expanded library hours, technology, literacy, nutrition, health, and fitness programs. Partnerships have been formed in order to develop a cohesive curriculum in our Learning Centers. The Richland County Extension Service is a major partner in the delivery of parenting classes, 4-H projects, and food and nutrition classes. Wahpeton Parks and Recreation and Zoo is also a primary vendor for bringing environmental, historical, recreational, cultural and arts out to the centers. The Hometown Heroes Program is a partnership with the North Dakota State College of Science Athletic Department to deliver drug and health activities to the Learning Centers.

Expanded Learning Opportunities
The project focuses on providing children, youth, and adults with expanded learning opportunities to enrich the lives of those in the rural communities. We encourage every community member to become involved because participation is vital to the projects existence. If you have a passion that you would love to share with the young or old, we would appreciate hearing from you. We would love to tap into our communities' individual hidden talents and share them with others.

Project Goals
The project goals are to promote the well-being of students, create family, school, and community partnerships for lifelong learning, improve student achievement, and provide a safe, disciplined, and drug free environment.

Mission Statement: The Richland County Afterschool Program is dedicated to the development, education, safety, and care of school-age children during their out-of-school hours.
