Dickey County Extension

Temperature Tracking:  Dickey County Agricultural Improvement Association, NDSU Extension Service Dickey County and Ducks Unlimted are tracking soil temperatures in several scenarios in no-till corn.  The group is following temperatures of a conventional tilled,  strip till and no-till fields that are planted to corn. The soil probes are place at seeding depth of about 2 inches. The temperature are being logged by a Watchdog monitor every hour.

 

VISTO STRIP TILL AND NO-TILL

Visto Farms have been no tilling for the past six years. Their farm is located in the Ludden/Guelph area on the west side of the James River. The site at Visto was winter wheat in 2004.  This field was strip tilled in the fall of 2004. There was a test strip left in stubble. The field was planted on May 6, 2005

 

The legend for the graph below are: Tmp= blue-air temperature, TmpA=Tan- No-till stubble before planting and after planting is monitoring the temperature in the blacken planted area, TmpB=Green-Strip-Tilled, TmpC=Turquoise-No-till strip between the strip tills

Growth Stage June 2nd

 

 

CONVENTIONAL TILLED

LARRY ANDERSEN FARM is conventional tilled field.  It was barley in 2004 that had been disked in the fall of 2004.  It was cultivated this spring and planted to corn on April 20, 2005.

The legend is: Tmp=Blue-air temperature, TmpA=Tan-soil temperature at seed depth

The soil probe was cut on May 6th  and wasn't detected until the next reading on May 13. Thus you'll see some erratic movements from May 6th at 1:00 pm until May 13th when the probe was detected damaged and replaced.

No-Tilled STRAW REMOVED

Hamar Farms was the site where the wheat straw was removed in 2004.  This field was no-till planted on May 2,2005.

There will be erratic movements from May 2-May 5th.  The probes were removed at planting and didn't get place back in the field until May 5th.
