| The goal of the Family Nutrition Program
(FNP) is to provide educational programs that increase, within a limited
budget, the likelihood of food stamp recipients making healthy food
choices and choosing active lifestyles consistent with the most recent
advice reflected in the Dietary Guidelines for Americans and the Food
Pyramid System (mypyramid.gov).
The FNP program is intended to fill four basic
educational needs:
- Dietary Quality - Assist food stamp households to
adopt healthy eating and active lifestyles.
- Food Security - Insure that food stamp households
have enough to eat without resorting to emergency food assistance.
Also making sure people eligible for the FSP but not
participating are made aware of its benefits and how to apply for them
as a part of nutrition education activity.
- Food Safety - Improve food stamp households' safe
handling, preparation, and storage of food.
- Shopping Behavior/Food Resource Management -
Enhance practices related to thrifty shopping and preparation of
nutritious foods by food stamp households.
The FNP program targets Food Stamp Program
Participants with educational information. This is accomplished through
public service announcements, basic food and nutrition demonstrations,
newsletters, fact sheets, individual consultations, and group educational
sessions. |
