Careers with the NDSU Extension Service

Staff Opportunities and Responsibilities

The NDSU Extension Service staff includes:

  • County Extension agents -- agriculture and natural resources; family and consumer sciences; 4-H youth development; community, economic development and leadership; the Family Nutrition Program; and the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program

  • Nutrition education assistants

  • State and area specialists in various subject matter areas

  • Communications, technology, administrative and other staff

These staff members deliver research-based education and information through various means, including:

  • Workshops, demonstrations, one-on-one interaction

  • Newspaper articles, and radio and TV programs

  • Web sites, publications, newsletters, CDs and DVDs

  • Videoconferences

Job duties of most county-based NDSU Extension Service professionals include:

  • Assessing clientele needs

  • Developing and delivering educational programs using various methods for target audiences

  • Providing leadership in 4-H youth development programs

  • Building partnerships and collaborations with organizations, agencies and businesses

  • Marketing educational programming

  • Evaluating educational programming

  • Participating in professional development experiences

  • Performing administrative duties

New staff members are expected to have subject matter expertise. The NDSU Extension Service offers and supports training to help the staff develop these other skills.
