Careers with the NDSU Extension Service

What are the Salaries and Benefits?

Salary

Salaries are competitive with those in similar professions and vary based on the degree held, previous professional experience and assignment.

Benefits

NDSU offers a generous array of fringe benefits, such as annual leave (vacation), sick leave, educational and family leave, health insurance for employees and dependents, disability insurance, life insurance and worker's compensation.

Employees may be eligible to have tuition waived to take academic classes and for tuition discounts for spouse and dependents.

Flexible Spending Accounts allow employees to set aside pretax income to pay for dependent care expenses and/or medical expenses.

A retirement plan is provided for most employees.

For details on these and other benefits, see www.ndsu.edu/jobs.

Lifelong Learning

The NDSU Extension Service believes in continuing professional development and provides the staff with training in subject matter areas, personal and organizational management, program development and educational design, communications and technology. Statewide conferences and associations also offer professional development.

A Staff Resource Library includes books, CDs, videos and other materials for self-study. Various grants, scholarships, awards and other funds are available to support professional development.

Why Have I Made Extension My Lifelong Career?

  1. They actually pay you to help people!
  2. Having a person you have worked with throw their arms around you with tears in their eyes and thank you for all you did for them in a difficult time
  3. The friends and the strong bonds that you make with the people you serve
  4. 4-H members and families send you Christmas cards and stay in touch with you long after they are out of 4-H
  5. Watching youth grow into productive and responsible citizens, and knowing you had a small hand in that
  6. Finding division and conflicts in organizations when you arrive and leaving unified organizations that look upon diversity of opinions as a strength and not a weakness
  7. Oh, the people you will meet!
  8. Being your own boss if you take care of the people
  9. They not only pay you to learn, but expect it!
  10. Extension people are some of the most creative and fun people you will ever work with
