How Can I Qualify for an Extension Position?

Extension agent positions require a bachelor's degree in the subject matter advertised for that position or a closely related field. Area and state specialist positions require a master's or Ph.D.

All NDSU Extension Service employees must have valid driver's licenses. Extension agents typically must provide their own transportation and will be reimbursed. Specialists typically use state fleet vehicles.

Extension employees must have competencies in written, verbal and interpersonal communications; information and educational technology; program development and educational design; and personal and organizational management; and have a commitment to the principles of diversity.

See specific job announcements for detailed requirements.

"The most successful programs I have conducted were suggested by my clients and not what I thought they needed to know. It is essential to have an inquisitive and open mind for success in building a program."

Brad Brummond
Extension Agent/Cropping Systems, Walsh County
