Social Media

Email, MySpace, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Yahoo, Google, texting, etc; are you digitally connected? Most people would agree that email and a web presence are important in today’s business world but what about a Twitter or Facebook account? While many older individuals think email is a great new way to keep in touch with family and friends, today’s teenager says “email is for business”, “keeping in touch with friends means texting, twittering, or facebooking”.  Many of today’s youthful entrepreneurs are even foregoing “traditional” webpages in favor of Facebook pages to keep in touch with “fans”. We are even giving it a try with a new NDSU Extension Burke County facebook page. Check us out and become a fan. We will be using this site to let you know what’s happening.

Pocket Video

As part of the changing digital environment I became part of the NDSU Extension Pocket Video Project. I now have a flip video 8 gig pocket video camcorder which I will be using to document various activities and explore the use of youtube videos in Extension programming. Participating NDSU Extension Agents and Specialists will be posting videos to the NDSUExtension Channel.  http://www.youtube.com/user/NDSUExtension

I got the flip video cam last week at spring conference in Bismarck. I tried it with my computer at home this weekend but discovered I need a much better computer for any editing or even to view the high def videos from the camera. I plugged in the camera to my office laptop this morning and it kept causing the computer to lock up. I finally unplugged all other USB devices and it connected ok. It did not automatically install the flipshare software though. I accessed the cameras hard drive through windows explorer and was able to locate and install the software. Eventually I was able to assemble a few clips from video recorded in Bismarck last Thursday and use the flipshare movie maker software to create a short video and upload it to the NDSU Extension Burke County facebook page.
