Fall Weed Control

Application of herbicides now has greater long term results.

Now is a great time for weed control! Fall application of herbicides to most perennial weed species is far more effective than spring or summer control. Weeds like Canada Thistle, Dandelion, Bindweed, and Leafy Spurge are really making an effort to store energy in their root systems for winter survival and next spring’s growth. Applying herbicides now can mean much better translocation into the root systems of perennial weeds and better long term control.

Whether you are concerned about weeds in cropland, pastureland, or lawns this is the time to hit them hard.

The frost did slight damage to a few weeds but did not hurt most infestations. The lack of rainfall the last six weeks may have caused some weeds to become dormant. Dormant or dried weeds will not absorb and move chemical within the plant. If the weeds you hope to kill seem dry and dead do not waste your spray on them. If they have leafy green leaves around the base of the plant go ahead and spray even if the stems seem dry or dead.

Late August through early October herbicide applications, can provide great control. If we receive additional hard frosts, wait a few days after the frost event to evaluate the damage to the leaves of the weeds which you plan to treat. If they stay green and healthy, spray them!
