Plans are coming together for the 2012 Burke County Fair to be held June 15, 16, & 17 at the Burke County Fairgrounds one mile north of Flaxton. Tentative plans include 4-H and open class exhibits, the Northwest Jr. Livestock Show, two grandstand shows on Saturday night, a beer garden, Games Galore Inflatables, and an Antique Tractor Pull on Sunday afternoon.

Burke County Ag Improvement Annual Meeting

The Annual Meeting of the Burke County Agricultural Improvement Association has been tentatively set for February 28th in Portal. Soil Health, Cover Crops, and New Farm Technology (Remote Monitoring, Variable Rate Applications, Cell Phone Apps, Etc.) will be the topic areas presented.

Apps for Ag

The number of available apps for smartphones which can have Ag applications keeps growing everyday. There are a number of apps using GPS technology through your phone that can help measure distances and acreages, mark locations in a field, calculate growing degree days to help make insecticide and fungicide decisions. There are numerous note taking apps available which can be synced to laptops and PC’s.

I ran across a neat little app called “Bubble Level” which turns your phone into a level useable for leveling equipment or carpentry work, hanging a picture, or any other jobs you might need a level for.

Some of these apps are free, others must be purchased, some have annual fees. Many have free basic versions and premium versions which you must buy or subscribe to.

If you can imagine a possible use, just google it and someone probably has it available or is working on it.
