Introduction

North Dakota has been identified as a state with great potential to supply biomass. Several groups, both in-state and out-state, have expressed interest in establishing biomass processing industries in North Dakota, either to reduce carbon emissions of coal-fired power plants or to produce cellulosic biofuels.

This project develops a searchable database and inventory of biomass presently available in North Dakota from agricultural, forestry, and municipal sources. The database can be searched by individual county or groups of counties combined. Biomass estimates can be used to calculate the availability of biofuel energy by county which is an important aspect of economic feasibility and business plan commercialization for cellulosic biofuel venture proposals. This study serves to showcase North Dakota as a leading developer of renewable energy resource infrastructure.
