McAfee
VirusScan 8.0i is the newest enterprise version of the McAfee
anti-virus products. It is the direct successor of 7.1.
What's
the difference?
While
still providing the same protection as 7.1, 8.0i also provides
additional protections against internet-based
virus attacks. It attempts to block internet communications to
your computer that are suspected to be virus activity. It also
attempts to prevent viruses from using your computer
to attack others over the network, saving precious network
resources and helping to keep your computer from being blocked
from the internet.
Where
can I get it?
Currently
the best place to get it is to download it from the NDUS anti-virus
website at antivirus.nodak.edu Please
note that you will need to login using your firstname.lastname
account to get access to the software.
Additional Protections Provided by 8.0i
8.0i VirusScan console. As you can
see, there have been a few additions to 7.1 including
Access Protection, Buffer Overflow Protection, and
an Unwanted Programs Policy.
This
is the Access Protection Property page. With this
page, McAfee gives you the ability to limit the
network & internet access
programs have. This is
helpful in keeping IRC bots, and unwanted FTP and
e-mail programs from sending out data that could
get your computer blocked from NDSU's network.
If
you are having trouble with FTP, FrontPage, or
Dreamweaver, you may want to uncheck the ftp protection.
This is the Unwanted Program Policy page.
This page will allow you to tell McAfee exactly what
types of spyware, adware, and other junk software you
want it to block.
