McAfee 8.0 & 8.5i have two parts. A resident (VShield) and
an on-demand scanner. The resident VShield program
watches the files you use and open and scans them for viruses as
you attempt to use them. The on-demand scanner can be used to check
the entire drive, including files you don't normally use or know
exist, to be sure there are no viruses anywhere on your computer.
McAfee 8 also includes additional protections against IRC bots, unauthorized
ftp servers, mass mailing worms, spyware, adware, joke programs
and others.
While most
of McAfee is auto configured during the installation, if you are
using the off campus version there are a number of details that
can be
changed to best make use of NDSU's own DAT file download location.
These
changes
can be
found in the Setup area.
For those just looking to update their anti-virus software
immediately to respond to a new virus threat, you can find instructions
in the Updates area.
If you are
just looking to find out how to use the on-demand scanner to check
your hard drive for viruses, you can find more information in the Scanning area.
