What is Disk
Defragmenter?
Disk defragmenter
(also called disk defrag) is a program that is designed to optimize
disk access and improve computer performance. It does this by grouping
corresponding
pieces of data
together. This reduces the time the computer needs to search for
the next necessary piece of information.
Why Should
I use Disk Defragmenter?
Imagine a
library so busy that when new books came in, the librarian barely
had time to find room
to store them, much less put them in their proper place. At the
same time, removing old unwanted books left gaps in the shelves
because
there was no time to re-organize. Eventually books would end up
in any spot that will hold them, regardless of whether they were
in the correct section or even alphabatized. This would ultimately
result in complete chaos and slowdown in library services.
This is the
exact same thing that happens to your computer every time you
turn it on. Every program we use and every button we click causes
the
computer to send and retrieve data. Because the computer is so
busy doing what we ask, it doesn't have time to stop and re-organize
on it's own. Instead, it just places data wherever space is available
in order to keep up with the demands of the user. Over time, this
data gets more and more disorganzied and can cause your computer
to slow down.
Because of
this,
the computer relies on us to choose when to stop and defrag (re-organize)
our hard drive.
When
Should I Use Disk Defragmenter?
Ideally,
it would be best to run it on a weekly or monthly basis. The more
often you run it, the less time it takes to re-organize your data.
How Do I Run Disk Defragmenter?
Open My Computer, right click on your hard drive (C:),
click on properties, click the Tools tab, and then click on Defragment
Now.
Please note that running disk defragmenter can take
anywhere from several minutes to over an hour. It is best to do this
when you are not planning to use the computer for an extended period
of time. It is also recommended that you temporarily disable your
screensaver before starting the program.
