If you have
recently upgraded to either Windows
XP Service Pack 2 OR McAfee
VirusScan 8.0i, you may be experiencing some problems with either
FTP, FrontPage, or Dreamweaver not connecting.
First check
to see if you have McAfee
8.0i installed. By default,
this version of McAfee includes features designed to block programs
from performing unwanted tasks. Unfortunately one of these features
also blocks FTP access. This can cause WS-FTP, FrontPage, and
Dreamweaver to not connect to your website like usual. In order
to fix this, you will need to turn
off the FTP block. You can do this by right clicking on the
VShield and selecting properties. You will now see an console
window, inside the window there will be an option for Access
Protection. Double click on this and an Access Protection Properties
window will appear. Part way down you will notice two checkboxes
with options for incoming and outgoing FTP. Uncheck both of these.
If this hasn't fixed your problem and you have installed Windows
XP Service Pack 2, you may need to turn off your firewall. Here
is a link to the University of Tennessee Health Science Center
on how to disable your Windows XP Service Pack 2 firewall.
