- How much flaxseed or oil should one consume daily?
The American Heart Association recommends 1 teaspoon (5g) of
flaxseed oil or 1 tablespoon (8g) of milled flax provides enough
ALA to meet dietary needs.
- How should flax be stored?
Flaxseed can be stored at room temperature for up to a year
if it is clean, dry and of good quality. Grind flax as needed
to ensure it stays fresh. Milled flaxseed can be stored in the
refrigerator for up to 30 days in an airtight, opaque container.
- Can it be used as a cooking oil?
Flax oil should not be used for cooking. It is degraded by light,
heat and air.
Lignans are phytoestrogens. Phytoestrogens are compounds that
have been shown in laboratory studies of animals to help protect
against certain kinds of cancer, mainly breast and colon cancers,
by blocking tumor formation.
